New Theatre Will Promote Ontario's Diversity, Showcase International
Talent
TORONTO, Feb. 4 /CNW/ - The Ontario government is promoting diversity and
building stronger communities by investing in a new performing arts theatre
and multi-purpose hall at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto,
Premier Dalton McGuinty announced today.
"This theatre will connect Ontarians from all communities, and help
promote Ontario, and Canada, to the world," said Premier McGuinty. "We're
proud to join Ontario's Chinese community in supporting this exciting, new
development in the performing arts."
The McGuinty government, through the Ministry of Culture, is providing
$1 million to help build a new 620-seat theatre, and a multi-purpose hall for
dancing, martial arts, recreation activities, trade shows and conventions.
The cultural centre first opened in 1998 and provides programs to almost
500,000 Chinese Canadians in Ontario. It includes a resource centre, reception
hall, art gallery, tea house, arts studios, conference rooms and the Asian
Business and Culture Development Centre, which assists and promotes Asian
Pacific trade. The centre also hosts cross-cultural activities, including
joint exhibitions with other multicultural groups.
The theatre expansion is the second phase of construction at the cultural
centre. Plans for a third phase of construction on a traditional Chinese
garden are expected in the future.
"Ontario is enriched by the culture and heritage of the many people who
have chosen to make this province their home," said Minister of Culture
Madeleine Meilleur. "The McGuinty government is committed to cultural
expression in all its diversity."
"We are pleased with the support of the Ontario government, which will
help make our cultural centre a hub of the community for everyone to enjoy,"
said Dr. Ming Tat Cheung, Director of the centre. "With the expanded facility,
we will now be able to provide larger theatrical activities for various kinds
of stage performances, including Cantonese and Beijing operas."

province," said Premier McGuinty. "My wish is that we continue to work
together to promote Ontario's diversity - here at home, and around the world."
